Isabel ou Elisabete ? A Tradução do Novo Mundo acertou novamente!


A Tradução do Novo Mundo da Bíblia é “muito melhor”, e “a mais exata das versões comparadas” disse o erudito Jason Beduhn ao comparar diversas Bíblias de língua inglesa em seu livro Truth in Translation (Verdade no assunto de Tradução). Evidência disse aparece até mesmo na opção de tradução de nomes, como no caso do nome da esposa do sacerdote Zacarias, e mãe de João, o Batizador.

Ἐλισάβετ – Grego de Elisabeth
אֱלִישֶׁבַע – no Hebraico Elisheva que em português seria Elisabeth

Veja a forma empregada na Vulgata Latina de Jerônimo, do 4º Século:

“et non erat illis filius eo quod esset Elisabeth sterilis et ambo processissent in diebus suis” Lucas 1:5

Abaixo temos o texto grego padrão usado atualmente para se traduzir o “Novo Testamento”:

 

“Ἐγένετο ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις Ἡρῴδου βασιλέως τῆς Ἰουδαίας ἱερεύς τις ὀνόματι Ζαχαρίας ἐξ ἐφημερίας Ἀβιά, καὶ γυνὴ αὐτῷ ἐκ τῶν θυγατέρων Ἀαρὼν καὶ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῆς Ἐλισάβετ” Lucas 1:5 (Note que se lê Elisabet). NA28

A maioria das versões de língua portuguesa empregam o nome Isabel. Alegam que é uma variante aceitável do nome grego Elisabet. Ao meu ver é um nome que não deve ser usado para substituir o nome Elisabet pois se assemelha mais ao nome Jezabel. Todas as versões de língua inglesa que consultei empregam Elisabet. Note que Isabel não termina com um T e se assemelha mais com Jesabel.

Ambas podem ser usadas, mas é mais que óbvio que Elisabete segue de perto o texto grego.
