Jehovah´s Witnesses and The Jews – An answer to Yad L’Achim

“One of the most aggressive missionary groups operating today in the State of Israel is the sect which calls itself ‘Jehovah’s Witnesses’ “. With such words the site of Yad L’Achim, an anti missionary group in Israel starts presenting their opinion about Jehovah´s Witnesses.

Are Jehovah’s Witnesses a sect or a cult?

“Some define sect to mean a group that has broken away from an established religion. Others apply the term to a group that follows a particular human leader or teacher. The term is usually used in a derogatory way. Jehovah’s Witnesses are not an offshoot of some church but include persons from all walks of life and from many religious backgrounds. They do not look to any human, but rather to Jesus Christ, as their leader.

A cult is a religion that is said to be unorthodox or that emphasizes devotion according to prescribed ritual. Many cults follow a living human leader, and often their adherents live in groups apart from the rest of society. The standard for what is orthodox, however, should be God’s Word, and Jehovah’s Witnesses strictly adhere to the Bible. Their worship is a way of life, not a ritual devotion. They neither follow a human nor isolate themselves from the rest of society. They live and work in the midst of other people”. source 1

Are JWs aggressive in their missonary work?

No, JWs are not aggressive at all.  If someone says JWs are “persistent” or “courageous”, that´s correct. We should have the same courage to listen to them before we form a prejudiced view based on the opinion of others. Don´t be so fast in accepting what some people say. It is an unfair feeling of dislike for a group because of religion. Be wise and form an opinion based in your observation. Some neutral sources have something to say:

“Thirty thousand at the Olympic Stadium in silence . . . No litter, no noise, no shouting. That was the scene in the Olympic Stadium yesterday . . . No unseemly gesturing, not a cigarette, not a [beverage] can. Only open Bibles, people taking notes, and children sitting quietly.”—L’Unità, reporting on a convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Rome.

A newspaper reported: “Jehovah’s Witnesses’ organization is really impressive. The places where they gather are always clean. Everything is very well organized . . . When their events finish, the venue is cleaner than they found it. During the talks, there is absolute silence. Nobody pushes or bumps against others. Good manners prevail. . . . It is indeed an orderly religion. They know what worshipping God means.”Comércio da Franca.

“Therefore they warn their children about the dangers of using drugs, smoking and the abuse of alcohol. They recognize the importance of honesty and hard work. . . . Jehovah’s Witnesses teach their children moral qualities, to respect the authorities, other individuals and their property and to be law abiding citizens.”—The History of Religion in Ukraine, edited by Professor Petro Yarotskyi.
